Pokemon TCG AI Battle Challenge – Launch & Details
On June 16, 2026, The Pokemon Company, in collaboration with Kaggle (a Google-owned machine-learning platform), launched the Pokemon Trading Card Game AI Battle Challenge. The competition invites developers to build AI agents capable of playing the Pokemon TCG, testing strategic complexity, deck-building, hidden information, and adaptability. Organizers note that while AI has mastered Chess, Shogi, and Go, the Pokemon TCG introduces unique hurdles such as a large card pool, diverse tactics, type matchups, draw-based decision-making, and in-match unpredictability.
The challenge is structured in two initial categories. The Simulation Category (June 16 – August 17, 2026) focuses on automated agent training and matches run on Kaggle; it offers no cash prizes but provides performance data for the Strategy Category. The Strategy Category (June 16 – September 14, 2026) requires a strategic report explaining the AI system’s logic, with rankings based on agent stability, deck design concepts, and simulation performance. The top eight teams in the Strategy Category advance to a second-round finals event later in 2026.
Matches use Pokemon TCG Standard-format rules, with a 10-minute match clock, and players are limited to cards from an organizer-provided pool. Finalists receive $3,000 in Google Cloud credits per participant, the overall winner earns $50,000, and the runner-up receives $30,000. The event is organized by The Pokemon Company, Matsuo Institute, and HEROZ, with support from Google, Google Cloud, Nvidia, and Kaggle.
