Marvel Rivals’ Psylocke Design Dodges Yellowface

Marvel Rivals hosted a weekend trivia event that gave players their first official look at Psylocke, the latest X-Men character joining the game’s growing roster. Developer NetEase Games revealed a design inspired by Peach Momoko’s alternate-universe comic run Demon Days, set in Feudal Japan and following swordswoman Sai alongside her dog Logan.

The design shared by Marvel Rivals appears to depict Kwannon as Psylocke, rather than the original Betsy Braddock. Psylocke first appeared in Captain Britain #8 in the 1970s as Betsy Braddock, a white British woman. Later, the character was depicted with an Asian appearance under the name Lady Mandarin after being taken in by the Hand. This portrayal was long criticized as “yellowface,” a controversy addressed in 1993 when writer Fabian Nicieza retroactively established that Betsy had been body-swapped with Kwannon. By using Kwannon’s visual identity, Marvel Rivals sidesteps that problematic history entirely.

Early Look and Roster Growth

Only an early preview of Psylocke has been released, so her final in-game appearance could still change. Captain America and the Winter Soldier are also confirmed for the roster as the game returns on December 6. With the December launch approaching, fans can expect more updates on Psylocke and other additions in the coming weeks.
