Marvel Rivals: Scared Overwatch 2 Into Big Risks

Blizzard Entertainment has credited the launch of Marvel Rivals with pushing the Overwatch 2 team to embrace bigger creative risks, according to Walter Kong, senior vice president and head of development. In a group interview attended by the author, Kong stated that Marvel Rivals’ December 2024 arrival in the hero shooter space forced Blizzard to reconsider ideas it had previously been too cautious to pursue. He described the impact as both intimidating and energizing, saying the rival gave the team “license to go for it” and be less risk-averse.

Kong noted that the competitive pressure shifted Blizzard’s internal mindset, making conservative approaches feel riskier than experimentation. This shift has manifested in several bold Overwatch 2 additions: the Stadium mode, which rethinks standard 5v5 match structure; a new perk system that adds mid-match modifiers; and a recent decision to launch five heroes at once. These features represent a departure from the team’s previously cautious design philosophy.

The rivalry between the two games is visible in player-count comparisons, though Steam figures tell only part of the story. Marvel Rivals has recorded an all-time peak of over 644,000 concurrent players on Steam, with recent daily peaks near 100,000. Overwatch 2, by contrast, hit a Steam all-time peak of 166,000 and recent 24-hour peaks around 65,000. While these numbers exclude other platforms, they underscore the competitive pressure Blizzard faces in the same genre space.

That pressure extends beyond the two titles. The hero shooter market has proven brutal for new entrants: Highguard shut down permanently after just over a month on the market, and developer Wildlight later conducted layoffs. These events highlight the difficulty of sustaining a live-service shooter in the current environment.
